"Building our internal te reo capability and delivery is essential for our people to allow them to engage effectively with our Maori communities ."

Hori Mana, Poutakawaenga Māori, Fire and Emergency New Zealand

"One feature I really like is the ability to create your own mihimihi or pepeha. As you’ll note from mine, a mihi is deeply personal and shows the essence of who you are. I encourage everyone to create and learn their own."

Rhys Jones, CE Fire and Emergency New Zealand

FENZ – Whare Kōrero

Kia ora! Nau mai, haere mai ki a Whare Kōrero

Welcome to Whare Kōrero, Fire and Emergency New Zealand‘s Māori Cultural Intelligence app.

Whare Kōrero is designed to help the workforce of Fire and Emergency New Zealand on those occasions where an understanding
of, and sensitivity to, Māori rituals, protocol and etiquette are required.

It puts a range of useful resources at their fingertips, including mihi or greetings, hui and marae protocol, and examples of common waiata, with both words and audio tracks.

This initiative is recognition that Māori culture is unique to New Zealand and what makes us distinctive from other countries, and so is something we should all be proud and respectful of.

The resource is intended to help grow understanding by alleviating any barriers to participation and building understanding of each other’s culture and values, which is a gift that can be passed on to future generations.

Kia kaha te reo Māori – Let’s make the Māori language strong!
