"What we’ve found is when we use ‘kia ora’ and ‘mā te wā’, there can be a lot of excitement from some of our customers who want to engage more with the language, and say, ‘kei te pēhea koe’ (how are you). Some of our staff are not as confident to engage in that conversation. So part of my role is to provide the tools for them to learn at their own time and strengthen their ability to engage with the language.”
Jahmaine Cummings-Hodge (Ngāti Hikairo, Ngāti Whakaue), cultural development consultant for Air New Zealand.
"“Araraurangi is a huge supporter of Māori culture and encourages sharing the culture through the use of te reo. We wanted to create an app to help our people on their te reo journey and at the same time give Aotearoa the opportunity to learn and feel comfortable using te reo with us.”
Henare Johnson Cultural Development Manager
Nau mai, haere mai!
Welcome to the Kia Rere app which uses your story to help you easily engage with the Māori language and culture.
We’ve included some basic information on te reo Māori (the Māori language), mihimihi (acknowledgements and introductions), tikanga (customs) and waiata (songs). We also help you create your own mihimihi so you can share your story and connection with the land with the world.
Keep an eye out for whakatauki I whakatauaki (proverbs) throughout the app and hover over the content to learn more about the proverb as your guide.
Kia Rere was developed by Air New Zealand, the national carrier of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Kia Rere symbolises Air New Zealand’s role as leaders in promoting the values of Aotearoa to the world.
