"The telling of Whangaroa histories to the next generation to further educate the ideas of our history is a step closer with the launch of an interactive learning app."

Te Ara a Tāwhaki
Nā te hapū o Whangaroa Papa
Te Ara a Tāwhaki is new learning resource aimed at raising wider awareness and appreciation of local histories and te reo Māori.
The app covers the creation story of local site of significance Te Ara ā Tāwhaki; and honours the long-held hapū narrative of ancient occupation and the principles of tangata whenua and kaitiakitanga.
This is a story from Ngāti Rua ki Whangarua about Tāwhaki and his ascension to the heavens. It tells of a place called Te Ara ā Tāwhaki, and the places where Tāwhaki went before ascending to the heavens.
The app includes teachers’ notes and ideas for activities with students and is available to all schools and kura throughout the region and across Aotearoa New Zealand.
This is a collaborative project between the Whangaroa Papa Hapū, local kaumatua and kuia, Kiwa Digital who developed the app, and the Ministry of Education though the Te Aho Ngārahu initiative.
